This is going to be in multiple parts as I was able to get in a lot of pics on the computer. Okay so as promised-here are some more 'old-stuff' pics. Man the 90's were an odd period to like comics. Some of the art was either really good or it ripped off the really good stuff. The Jim Lee and Liefeld clones were out in force. I admit, I tried that route, never liked it. I always wanted to find my own 'voice' or style if you will. I at first wanted to be like the other clones out there, but then I started getting heavy into anime and animation in general, and I wanted to get more into drawing realistically, even if I couldn't grasp the concept. I'm self-taught, took some art classes in high school, then one in college, but never really applied myself or paid attention, cuz dammit i wanted to draw comics and they were teaching me how to draw fruit!! hahaha......Yeah the stuff that you really want to learn, but to a teenager you don't want to hear any of it, right?! So without further adieu here are some pics for ya:

This here wonderful scan was a cover idea i had started. i never really liked it, so it never got done. As I started it, it just didn't click, and no background ever got added either.

This is the first female face I ever drew to completion. I can't draw women for crap, but this one came out ok. Gotta love the hair too haha! It's like a frikkin helmet!

This here was always one of my faves. I did this my senior year of high school in a graphic arts class I took. We were making x-mas cards and this was my idea. At the time I was always annoyed by the 'sidewalk santas'-those bells and the whole idea used to piss me off(I was an angry child)-so my idea was what if Lobo met up with one? The balloon here said HO HO HO-and on the inside it said Merry Fraggin X-mas! Lovely right? The teacher just loved it. I printed a bunch up and sadly only have 1 left.

This here was a fist attempt at doing some kind of violent type picture-like I said man was I a pissed of teen haha! It's ok, Iwas just looking for an excuse to draw something with blood and bullet holes.

And this last piece(sorry for the bad scan I had to take it with my digi-cam), was my first ever try at a full comic page. The empty panel was supposed to be a figure in the doorway in the shadows but I could never get it to look right so I left it. That last panel needed more shadows also but didn't know how to really do it up right. The text there reads 'Nosferatu, man who lives forever!' I have this ongoing project concerning Nosferatu, where he's back to life in an apocalyptic future, and just wants to die, but can't seem to fight the need to feed and continue on. I'll post some of that down the line too for those interested.
Well there ya go for now I'll post more in a day or so. Peas out!
Mike

That's really cool that you have so much artwork that you did from high school and college. I remember drawing fruit as well. Reading this I was trying to remember specific things I had to draw. All I could think of was drawing my shoes. Cause it was over the course of a few classes. I of course had to wear my shoes which meant taking them off for art class and wearing them in between classes. So anyways I switched my shoes around or something and ended up drawing 2 left feet. I was really upset because I put a lot of work into it and otherwise it came out pretty well. But it was kind of embarrassing. And having to start all over to get it right. I was also on our literary staff at my high school. After reading your post the other day I was trying to remember the name of that award we used to win every year. It was such a big deal & about 15 or so years later I had to google it. The Scroggins Award. A few years ago my dog ate my magazine collection:(
Yeah, I went to college for graphic design in hopes to reach some sort of comic book career...let me explain.
I just got out of the military and I wanted to draw comics, even though I gave up collecting them for that time (goes back to my loss). I still wanted to draw...and that time away from comics gave me my own image (yes, I use to copy Jim Lee like it was going out of style). Hey, as an early teen, I bought all of the VHS tapes of Stan Lee introducing the big guys and how they do comics...I knew how to do it, or so I thought...anywho...I knew nothing of the business, not one thing, and the college I attended knew nothing of the trade as well, but talked me into doing graphic design as it was the closest to what I wanted to do...I ended up knowing more about computers, and I learned how to draw an apple with charcoal to look realistic, along with other objects...I considered it a life lesson.
I was taking my time on getting into the comics world, but a feeling has come over me, and I need to get into it as soon as possible...
I'm rambling...
rene-yeah we used to have to do this one project where you look at the object, not the page and draw it freehand. i used to get yelled at cuz i'd cheat and keep looking at the page. i couldn't do it, it irked me to not be able to see what i was drawing. i wish i had more of my older stuff, i used to draw til my hands hurt. nowadays i get to doodle while waiting for people to make up their minds on the phone!
mcgill-yeah i've been getting the bug a lot lately to draw again, but it might not be for comics purposes per se. maybe fantasy illustration, and maybe the occasional comic related project. depends on what i can accomplish while reteaching myself.
I remember doing the "blind contour" drawings. You'd either have to focus on the object or the teacher would throw a large sheet of newsprint over your hand so you couldn't look at your drawing. Challenging, but fun. (Read: Sometimes a real pain in the arse.)
Don't feel bad about drawing women either. They're tough to do well. Heck, when I first started drawing comics I drew women with Adam's Apples. Shows you how much I paid attention to the human form.
McGill, I had the McFarlane Stan Lee VHS tape. Not the most insightful thing I've ever watched, but back then it was magic. I remember seeing one with Whilce Portacio, too, but I think he just happened to show up in the McFarlane tape.
oh yeah i meant to comment about the stan lee tapes but forgot to......i think i saw the one the liefeld did, with the character overkill was it? or was that jim lee's? i don't recall, but that's the one i saw, and yeah, it was ok-nothing earth shattering though.
I still have them...Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Rob Liefeld, and a couple others, but watched them everytime I drew something at home. Gotta bust out the VCR and play them, but it was either McFarlane or Liefeld who did Overkill. I know Lee drew this chick with the big hair with a gun in holster. I think McFarlane drew Spawn, and was one of the first glimpses of him after the lesson...I think...gotta dust off the VCR...
